Swan Lake Houston Theatre reviews
Disappointed on many levels...
I was excited to see a Russian Ballet company version of Swan Lake and it was the first time that my 13-year-old was seeing it. We had box seats that the ushers didn't seem to know how to get to. They were low on programs and were allowing 1 per two guests. I was surprised to see that this production did not have a live orchestra. I will call ahead next time. I felt the costumes were bland and cheap looking and was frankly bored during the first act. The principal dancers were fantastic and loved the connection between the swan queen and the princt...so fluid and effortless. Same for the dancer who portrayed Rothbart. Some of the corps dancers were on the older side and not very inspiring. This were also two intermissions that people were confused by but that's not the productions fault. Overall was dissapointed and my seats were horrible.
Superb production, lousy venue
The dancers were wonderful. Very talented and entertaining. I loved the costumes and the music. But the venue was only slightly better than a school gymnasium. It was much too light and the seating arrangement on the floor was poor.some of the more expensive seats in front were partially blocked by the stage curtains. The staff stood in the lobby talking and laughing, and they were clearly visible to the audience. The parking was ridiculous. Only one gate was open which caused a huge back up. The parking lot was in part a muddy field. This was no place to host a ballet. It was really a shame. I had never been to an event at the coliseum annex so I did not know what to expect. Now I know and I won't be back.
First Ballet Experience
Was delighted for the opportunity for my wife and I to experience Tchaikovsky's majestic Swan Lake as performed by the National Ballet of Odessa in the beautiful Lyric Theatre. Am glad for some prior research into the storyline of this classical pageantry.
Compared to YouTube ballet presentations, the Odessa troupe seemed to my untrained eye to perform swan episodes most gracefully. Every movement appeared in perfect choreography and synchrony with the musical score.
Our only regrets were box seat positions that obstructed almost a third of the stage. The soundtrack wasn't as crisp as expected (lacking high note presence; is this typical of Lyric acoustics?). Had hoped to obtain a program to identify performers, but found none available.
